TWO KANGAROOS

The old book is a fat kangaroo
with frayed skin, carrying
other worlds in its pocket.
An animal pregnant with
southern stars. A body
giving birth to old spirits.

The book is vanishing.
A computer screen is taking its place.

The screen has no smell.
No history.
No traces of hands and lips on its body.
No body at all.

What the screen is carrying in its pocket
are numbers - tiny skeletons
of the world.
