PIGEON

Pigeons, rats of the air,
with shabby feathers and red eyes,
peck at bread, bones, moldy peaches
spilled on the terrace.
I am disgusted with these symbols
of peace. And with people.

A black crow
drops down from the sky.
The pigeons scatter off.
The crow snatches up a baby pigeon,
stabs many times at its belly
and throws the bloody heap away.

At the edge of the terrace
the other pigeons wait,
their backs turned,
stepping uneasily,
pretending not to see.

When the crow comes
I almost sympathize with pigeons.
